Gaston Middle School eighth grader Austin Payan Soto stands out because of his willingness to help others .

He was English teacher Karina Vasquez ’ s unofficial teaching assistant during the last academic year . She said he still comes by to say hello .
“ I miss having him in my class . He was always kind and respectful to staff and peers . We could count on him to volunteer to read in class , and he even kept time and would let me know when we should begin putting materials away ,” Vasquez said .

“ He was my designated greeter , answering the door and any calls that came in . On a few occasions he was the ‘ co-teacher ’ for the day and did an outstanding job . Austin is always doing the right thing and jumping at the chance to help both teachers , staff and peers . He really is a special person .”
At home , Austin helps his mom in a variety of ways , including assembling shelves for their living room and repairing the back door . Austin lives with his mom and two older sisters who attend Edison High School . His goal was to be a mechanic , but it ’ s shifted to construction or designing video games .
