It took some coaxing to convince Eugene Reinor to apply for a leadership position in Fresno Unified . Five years later , he was selected as Fresno Unified ’ s Administrator of the Year .
Reinor ’ s leadership style combines positive high energy and support for his colleagues and students with a relentless pursuit of improving how students are taught using data and assessment . He also emphasizes the importance of creating a culture on campus where students feel safe and welcome and encourages students ’ and staff input .
Scandinavian Middle School teacher Cheyenne Wolvatne nominated Reinor for the 2022 Administrator of the Year .
Her nomination said , in part , that Reinor had “ shifted the climate and culture of our campus . His deep-seated values match his unwavering efforts to deliver our students the highest quality educational experience .”
Reinor is a natural leader . He did not always see himself that way .
In 2017 Reinor and his wife decided to return to the Valley where she grew up . After seven years teaching seventh graders at Serrano Middle School in San Bernardino , Reinor was ready for a new challenge outside the classroom . When applying with Fresno Unified , he was thinking instructional coach . But the late Holland Locker , on a panel interviewing Reinor , saw him as a leader .
“ The only one who didn ’ t know I should pursue being an administrator was me ,” Reinor said .
Several middle school principals were interested in having Reinor join their staff . Julie Goorabian-Ellis , principal at Scandinavian , won out . She later told Reinor , “ I wanted you for our team and I wasn ’ t going to leave until I got you .”
He was hired as the guidance learning advisor ( GLA ) at Scandinavian . Reinor was happy but said to his colleagues in San Bernardino : “ What are these Viking things ? I just don ’ t get it .”
