Jazlynn Duarte

Centennial Elementary School sixth-grader Jazlynn Duarte is good at art , dancing , and all of her academic subjects . But she is also empathetic beyond her years and helps other students concentrate in class , simply by example .

“ Jazlynn is more than your typical goal-driven student ,” said Rosalinda De La Fuente , Jazlynn ’ s teacher last year . “ She is also emotionally intelligent .”
De La Fuente said she would have Jazlynn sit next to students who needed extra guidance because Jazlynn ’ s “ patient demeanor helps them refocus .”
She said that Jazlynn instinctively knew how to help classmates .
Jazlynn clearly does not like to talk about herself . But when asked about her ability to help her classmates , she said that in third grade she recognized she was “ getting good at things .” too shy to ask for it .”
So does she want to be a teacher when she grows up ? Nope . Jazlynn aspires to be a professional singer . Her favorite artist is Olivia Rodrigo , a Grammy Award-winning pop singer . She will take choir for the first time when she goes to middle school next year . She also would like to work with a voice coach . In the meantime , she is excelling in dance .
She takes three or four classes a week at a studio and travels to competitions . Her group recently won a national championship in Anaheim . Jazlynn said her favorite style of dance is tap .
Jazlynn also enjoys drawing , especially cartoon characters like Snoopy : “ I just like being creative .”
She loves to read and recently started the “ Hunger Games ” series .
Her mom , Laurie Flores , says Jazlynn is great at balancing all her activities , helping her younger brother and maintaining straight A ’ s . Jazlynn ’ s teacher this year , Carmen Morales- Nunez , said Jazlynn is “ an amazing young lady .”
“ She has a strong work ethic . She is attentive and always willing to participate . I really look forward to seeing all the incredible things that she will accomplish ,” Morales-Nunez said .
“ Then I realized I could help others . I realized they needed help . I like helping [ others ] because I feel like I ’ m teaching them something , like I ’ m the teacher too ,” Jazlynn said .
