What is your role at Fresno Unified and what led you here ?
I am the director of college readiness in the College and Career Readiness Office . My role extends beyond individual schools to support students and counselors across the district . I work collaboratively with school counselors , administrators , district departments and other educational partners , like our local higher education partners , to develop and implement district-wide initiatives and programs and to ensure counselors are up to date with the latest information to support students in school and with their postsecondary plans .
What has been your biggest challenge ?
One of my biggest challenges has been finding balance between providing the best possible support to our school sites , while managing the administrative aspects of my role . I also miss the energy of being in space with students daily .
What ’ s the most rewarding part of your job ?
The most rewarding aspect of my work is the opportunity to be part of the development and implementation of new initiatives and programs that directly impact students ’ futures . Creating innovative programs that address the evolving needs of students is fulfilling . Witnessing the positive impact these programs have on students ’ college and career readiness , their confidence and their overall personal growth is personally very rewarding . Your team helps set students up for continued and future success .
Are there any new and exciting opportunities they should know about ?
Yes ! One of the newest initiatives we are promoting through our counseling teams is the Bulldog Bound program . Being part of the program guarantees admission into Fresno State starting in the ninth grade .
How do students participate ?
Students can participate by completing a registration form , maintaining a GPA of 2.0 or higher and completing A-G requirements ( minimum entrance course requirements ) to attend a fouryear university .
