This year ’ s Steve ’ s Scholars are highly motivated students who excelled in all areas during high school . But three stand out and received special awards :

Sebastian Alexander Bojorquez completed the most community service hours – 312 through the Air Force Junior Reserve Officers ’ Training Corp at Duncan Polytechnical High School . He will attend Fresno City College and plans to major in philosophy . Inspired by his own school counselor and the joy he gets from helping others , Sebastian will pursue school counseling as a career .

Roosevelt High School ’ s Ashley Garcia Martinez had the highest GPA at 4.3 . She wants to major in biology and become an orthopedic surgeon . She will initially attend Fresno City College .

Roosevelt ’ s Ronaldreagan Kaus Vang had the best attendance , only missing three days of school in seventh through 12th grades . Ronald will attend Fresno State and wants to be an electrical engineer for PG & E .

Steve ’ s Scholars Class of 2023 was made up of 38 seniors who graduated from Duncan Polytechnical , Fresno , McLane , Sunnyside , and Roosevelt high schools . It was the sixth cohort . Steve ’ s Scholars honors Francine and Murray ’ s adult son Steven . After his sudden death , they established the Steve ’ s Scholars scholarship program for students at Tehipite Middle School , where they knew financial resources were desperately needed . Their idea was to motivate students to strive for college , starting in the seventh grade . Students not only have to earn good grades , but they also need to have great attendance , take classes that prepare them for entry into college and serve their community . In total , the scholars volunteered more than 2,069 hours in their communities . Eleven of the students earned the Steve ’ s Scholars community service medallion by completing more than 60 hours . Students were awarded a $ 1,000 scholarship for each of their first two years of college . The Steve ’ s Scholars program currently has 277 students in grades nine through 12 .
