How do you want to impact the world ?
I want to create a more compassionate , equitable and healing school system to change future generations . I want to inspire other people to lead with their hearts and to make meaningful impact in their role , whatever that may be .
What advice would you give to an aspiring educator ?
My advice is to always remember the preciousness of the children we are here working for every day . Their lives , their hearts , their minds , their futures are at stake . With all of the busyness , pressures and problems we face in day-to-day work , we need to remember what truly matters – to make decisions that are in the best interest of our students . When you see a child , look at them with care and treat them with respect . Help them see they have value and a purpose here in this world ! I would also say to surround yourself with a community of like-minded and supportive colleagues who share your values . They will bring you inspiration , support , growth and will help you be the educator you want to be . We all need a village .
What is something unique , fun or interesting about you that most people don ’ t know ?
Most people don ’ t know that one of my hobbies is to paint . I create abstract paintings using acrylics and resin . I love having this creative outlet in my life and I owe my love for art to my elementary teacher Mrs . Bachand , who was the first person to call me an “ artist ” and I believed her .
How would you describe your leadership style ?
I love this quote from Belinda Hopkins that explains why I have a restorative leadership style : “ In order to work at our best , we need to feel safe , happy , valued and included … the reason restorative practices makes sense to people is that they allow us to interact the way we want to , and need to , as human beings .” Being a restorative leader means that I ’ m relationship centered and strength based . I balance high support , nurturing and engagement , with high expectations and a firm commitment to the work we are doing .
What has been one of your biggest challenges ?
I think one of my biggest challenges has been helping our district shift discipline practices from a traditional , more punitive approach , to one that is healing , and enhances responsibility . Punishment is something that is pervasive in the way that most of us experienced school , and it is almost automatic . Yet if asked , most of us would say we don ’ t personally like punishment
