Michael Frank describes the Air Force JROTC program at Duncan Polytechnical High School as more like a family than a class .
Frank , a retired technical sergeant , is proud to be an instructor in the program and help students learn good citizenship and character and how to serve their community . The four-year curriculum emphasizes Air Force heritage and traditions , the development of flight , applied flight sciences , military aerospace policies , and space exploration . JROTC stands for Junior Reserved Officer Training Corps .
Students develop a close bond as they work together as a unit . Frank describes the program as “ a unique environment ” that fosters leadership skills and instills confidence in students . Retired Col . Sam Vandiver is also an instructor in the program .
It ’ s a dream job for Frank . He grew up in Fresno , attending Heaton Elementary School and Computech Middle School . After graduating from Edison High School , he enlisted in the 144th Fighter Wing , California Air National Guard where he had a 23-year career in military law enforcement .
After retiring , Frank worked in juvenile corrections for Tulare County and Fresno County . Recognizing that Frank enjoyed the teaching aspects of his career , his wife – Kings Canyon Middle School teacher Stacey Frank – urged Frank to get his teaching credential .
