FACES of Fresno Unified SPRING 2024 | Page 35

Unified for at least 50 years , I know this because I was enrolled as a first grader , but the exact year it started is unknown . It expanded under the Department of Diversity , Equity , and Inclusion at the start of the 2023-24 school year . The goal is to improve the achievement levels of American Indian and Alaska Native students by providing academic support services and links to all available resources .
Why is this program so important ?
American Indian education is essential because Native American students suffer from generational trauma that interferes with their education . The state of education in our nation ’ s K-12 schools for Native students is distressing . Native students perform two to three grade levels below their white peers in reading and mathematics . Native American youth are 237 % more likely to drop out of school and 207 % more likely to be expelled than white students . For every 100 American Indian / Alaska Native kindergarteners , only seven will earn a bachelor ' s degree . This program assists indigenous youth with academic and financial difficulties to overcome the statistics against them . We work with local indigenous agencies to ensure life obstacles do not overcome Native American youth ’ s education .
What do you want our American Indian students to know ?
Our program will provide them with the necessary direction , resources , and educational support to help them achieve their highest levels of success .
