Now , her students get to visit the family farm and learn about small-family farming . The students may see and experience vegetables not in most grocery stores , like lemon grass , long beans and other Asian vegetables . As Baird ’ s agriculture teacher , she oversees the school garden where students are currently growing cherry tomatoes , spring mixed greens , radishes , purple and green kale , cabbage , cauliflower , onions , cilantro , pickle cucumbers , lemon basil , Thai basil , jalapeños , sugar peas , carrots and green beans .
Mrs . Her ’ s career in Fresno Unified began as a bilingual instructional aide at Birney Elementary School in 2004 . She was also the library technician at Birney and then Bullard TALENT K-8 School . She came to Baird in 2018 to be the attendance clerk and then the office manager . Meanwhile , she had earned her bachelor ’ s degree in liberal arts from Fresno State in 2008 with Bilingual , Cross-Cultural , Language and Academic Development certification .
When the Agricultural Science position opened in 2020-21 , former Baird principal Valerie Martinez and the current principal , Timona Martin , thought immediately that Mrs . Her would be the obvious choice .
“ They knew I grew up farming and also love education ,” Mrs . Her said .
They also knew that she would be a great teacher .
“ Mrs . Her is an educator at heart , and I knew this from the moment I met her ,” Martin said .
