About Emily : Emily Varela looks forward to a career in criminology and hopes to be an advocate for people who are not able to speak up for themselves . Through her participation in Roosevelt High School ’ s Public Service Pathway , she completed over 40 community service hours , helping at a wide array of events and health clinics — further expanding her love for public service . Emily has also excelled in several advanced placement and dual-enrollment classes .
Emily is the oldest daughter of immigrant parents and credits her family for giving her the strength and inspiration to achieve her greatest potential . When faced with a problem , all she does is think about her parents and all the sacrifices they made to ensure she has a path to success .
While at Roosevelt , Emily ’ s activities included the California Scholarship Federation , peer mentoring and lacrosse .
Thrilled to be a scholarship winner , Emily hopes to use her funds to pay for tuition fees and college school supplies that she knows will help her succeed in her academics .
In her words : “ My parents always told me ‘ tu sola te pones tus propios limites ,’ which translates to ‘ You create your own limits .’ I have always been a student that puts my education first . I always try my best to achieve my very best .”
From school counselor Cristina Moreno : “[ Emily ] is a young lady who is never afraid to ask questions and one to always take advantage of all the opportunities that come her way . She is one of the most inquisitive students I have met .”
