24 FACES
Where did you grow up and what brought you to Fresno Unified ?
I grew up in Visalia and graduated from Mt . Whitney High School . I moved to Fresno to attend college and play soccer and I have lived here since . Education is a second career for me as I spent 15 years in the live entertainment security industry before completing my kinesiology degree and becoming a physical education teacher . I was drawn to Fresno Unified because my wife worked for the district and had positive experiences here .
Prior to being the athletics manager , what other positions have you held in Fresno Unified ?
I coached elementary sports while completing my college degree . I began teaching physical education at Tioga Middle School and then I taught physical education at Computech . In addition to teaching , I was the athletic director and coached many different sports during my time as a teacher – cross country , track and field , wrestling , baseball , football and softball . I have also officiated various sports .
What brings you the most joy in your job ?
The greatest joy in my job is related to students – seeing their growth and hearing about their successes in academics , sports or extracurricular activities . Learning about their successes later on as they attend college and / or move into a career also makes me smile .
What is the most challenging aspect of your job ?
Keeping up with emails , phone calls and meetings on a daily basis in between the disruptive emergency situations requiring immediate attention .
On average , how many sporting events do you attend a week ?
It depends on the season , but usually I attend five to seven sporting events per week after school or in the evenings .
